the 8th wireless big data symposium, with the theme of "innovative 5g-a to 6g landmark technologies", was successfully held in vaya international hotel, changsha city, hunan province from september 3 to 4, 2022 with strong support and active participation from all parties.

since the first symposium at which the fundamental understanding of wireless big data was established, six more symposiums have been held, themed on the "research direction of wireless big data", "innovative technologies of 5g", "wireless big data and wireless ai", "continuous discussion of new demands and new technologies for 6g in the future", "creation of new wireless theory from data to knowledge", and "rising to the challenges of 2030" respectively. through these symposiums, participants have reached a consensus and innovative suggestions as well as feasible ways have been provided from different directions and approaches around basic theories and innovative technologies.

with the theme of "innovative 5g-a to 6g landmark technologies", the 8th symposium incorporated in-depth discussions on major technologies from 5g-a to 6g, and received support from competent ministries and commissions of china, well-known academicians and senior experts, r&d leaders of enterprises, as well as academic leaders and young talents from universities. amid the uncertainty of the pandemic and occasional outbreaks in some regions, 159 participants attended the symposium, including 65 enterprises/operators, accounting for more than one-third.

in addition to well-known experts such as wu hequan, academician of cae (online), gong ke, former president of tianjin university and nankai university, zhang ping, academician of cae and professor at beijing university of posts and telecommunications, you xiaohu, chief scientist of purple mountain laboratories and professor at southeast university, the symposium was also attended by specially invited guests, including zhang xinsheng, secretary-general of telecommunication science and technology committee of the ministry of industry and information technology of the people's republic of china, and sun ji, director of network technology division of department of information and communication development of ministry of industry and information technology of the people's republic of china. director sun ji also delivered a special speech at the symposium, hoping that experts and professors can make breakthroughs in core technologies of information communication and make innovative achievements in information communication according to the major needs of china's network communication development.

this symposium began with the keynote speech of academician wu hequan on the theme of "restart of 5g after three years of commercial use" and that of academician gong ke on the theme of "new achievements in the development of ai". professor zhang ping and professor you xiaohu from well-known universities also shared their research on "constructing licensed web 3.0 to play the trump card of metaverse" and "6g ultimate connection - theory and implementation" respectively. additionally, the enterprise/operators/research institutes represented by huawei, china mobile, caict also made excellent reports at the symposium.

the symposium was divided into three sessions: scale coverage (including air interface), network simplification (including semantics) and integrated sensing and communication (including intelligence). during the session on scale coverage and air interface innovation, attendees made reports on ultra-dense heterogeneous overlapping coverage, intelligent reflecting surface (irs) and intelligent transmission surface, the foundation of qam multiple access, rf-oriented capacity formula correction, inter symbol interference-oriented correction method, and other topics. during the session on network simplification and semantic communication, attendees made technical reports on the needs and considerations of 6g to simplified networks, intelligent programmable networks for 6g and semantic communication under network simplification. in addition, there were also discussions about "what should be simplified" and "how to simplify". during the session on integrated sensing and communication and ai, attendees made wonderful reports on the understanding of integrated sensing and communication and ai endogenesis, visual sensing-aided communication theory and experiment, and how to use wireless knowledge to face the challenges of wireless ai.

the 8th symposium also organized a public discussion on "cluster information theory" (large-scale, ai endogenous, strongly constrained information theory and related challenges for future communications and networks). the participants openly discussed the meaning and mathematical expression of "clustering", the process of information communication acting like a filter, and semantic communication called for new information processing. they also discussed their views on and understandings of the need for queuing theory from information theory to information science, and other topics. they spoke and discussed with each other freely and actively responded to the symposium.

on the eve of this symposium, the "5g evolution academic exchange forum 2022 annual meeting" was also organized to report the 2021 annual summary and 2022 annual planning of the forum since its establishment at the big data symposium last year. in 2021, the participants have completed the research on the vision of key technologies for wireless energy conservation and emission reduction and formulated the white paper on the vision of key technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction in wireless communication systems oriented to 5g evolution, which was publicly displayed at this 8th wireless big data symposium. as for 2022 annual planning, in addition to continuing the preparations for the 9th wireless big data symposium in 2023, a joint research group on high-frequency technology, an important frontier research group on energy conservation and emission reduction, and a youth activity group on basic communication theory research will be organized. more enterprises/operators are expected to participate in or organize joint research. and we are looking forward to more successful interdisciplinary academic discussions. at the 8th symposium, r&d personnel took the stage to publicly display the white paper on the vision of key technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction in wireless communication systems oriented to 5g evolution.

the symposium continued to participate in and promote the "3rd wireless big data competition" jointly organized by huawei and china mobile, with an award ceremony of the competition held at the symposium.
